We answer phone calls, check social media or watch videos: whether the device is a smartphone, computer or TV, digitalization is part of our daily lives. But digital tools are for more than entertainment -- they have already begun saving lives. In the cover story of our third issue of Making Access Happen, we examine how digitalization is transforming healthcare. Big data and artificial intelligence are already revolutionizing the ways patients access diagnosis and treatment, and they are supporting R&D in the search for innovative therapy options. And a number of astonishing projects are aimed at preventing diseases before they happen. We at Sandoz embrace the digital transformation in healthcare with the goal to realize the potential to improve patient outcomes. After reading our article, we hope that you will gain new perspectives about the way digitalization is improving access to healthcare.
While high-tech is transforming parts of our world, we should keep in mind that many people lack fundamental necessities, including household electricity and clean cooking options. Globally, one in three people rely at least partially on cooking or heating their homes with open-fire. In this issue, we investigate the serious health hazards arising from indoor smoke, which affects primarily women and children. Access to information about the risks of this practice is the first step toward healthier lives for millions of families globally.
As living standards in low- and middle-income countries improve, the disease burden from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) – mainly cancer, diabetes, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases – is also growing. Together, the four main NCDs have become “the world’s biggest killer.” Every year, 40 million people die from those conditions - and in some cases, these deaths could be prevented through changes in behavior. Alongside this, access to generic medicines to treat NCDs will help more people fight these killers. In this issue, we talk to specialists from WHO about strategies for addressing the NCD epidemic and explore how Sandoz is helping.
And we also provide a story of hope in Ghana, where Sandoz has expanded its partnership with World Child Cancer. This organization works to improve the medical outcomes of children with cancer, and to educate their families and healthcare workers on treatment options. We meet also two of Ghana’s dedicated pediatric oncologists who work tirelessly to make access to treatment possible for children and their families.
Whether through individual efforts or huge data networks, access to healthcare happens on many levels. You’ll find many stories on this website, and we hope you will join the discussion through social media with #MakingAccessHappen. Should you know someone working to make access happen, or if you’d like to tell us what access to healthcare means to you, we’d love to hear from you at [email protected]
